You might be asking yourself, “What is Labor Day?” People outside the United States are unfamiliar with it. Labor Day is a federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September. It celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers. The first big Labor Day in the United States was observed on September 5, 1882 by the Central Labor Union of New York.
Today, Labor Day symbolizes the end of the summer. In high society, Labor Day is (or was) considered the last day of the year when it is fashionable for women to wear white. An explanation in Time Magazine notes that vacationers used Labor Day as an excuse to update their wardrobe. Lighter colored clothing got put away and heavier, darker colors were reintroduced for fall.
In the sporting world, Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons in the United States. NCAA teams play their first games the week before Labor Day. The NFL traditionally plays their first game the Thursday following Labor Day.
