January is Glaucoma Awareness Month and optometrists around the nation are preparing for the month-long initiative in a number of different ways. One highly effective way to raise awareness of glaucoma is through the creation and distribution of custom lapel pins.
The small mementos are more than just a gift. They’re a highly effective educational tool and when used in your optometry office, they can help save a person’s sight. Custom lapel pins make a great addition to your Glaucoma Awareness Month events and outreach programs.
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a vision impairment that causes damage to the optic nerve in the eye. It worsens over time. Pressure inside the eye can build-up and ultimately cause a person to lose their sight. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, “It is estimated that over 2.2 million Americans have glaucoma but only half of those know they have it.”
There are two different types of glaucoma a person can have. The first is open-angle glaucoma, also known as wide-angle glaucoma. It makes the eye appear normal but prevents fluid from draining from the eye properly.
The second type of glaucoma is angle-closure glaucoma, which is also known as acute, chronic angle-closure, and narrow-angle glaucoma, is less common. It can cause a sudden build-up of pressure in the eye. Drainage may be poor. The angle between the iris and the cornea can be too narrow, preventing fluid from leaving the eye.
Signs and Symptoms of Glaucoma
The signs and symptoms of glaucoma vary from one individual to the next. Here are some things that WebMD tells you to look for:
A vision test focuses on the optic nerve. It allows the optometrist to see changes in the eye as glaucoma progresses. This type of test is standard, does not cause pain, and takes very little time to administer.
Create Custom Lapel Pins with Cardstock as an Educational Tool
Custom cardstock is a highly effective way to present information to the public. It can be imprinted with a message, statistics or tips for preventing glaucoma. It can also serve as a business card of sorts for your optometrist office. Card stock can be imprinted with your name, address, phone number, email address, and homepage URL. This gives people easy access to you and the information that you have included on your website.
Showing Support for People with Glaucoma and Glaucoma Research Groups
