Trying to capture market share with the 18 and under crowd? Whether your business is video games, food, clothing or novelty items, here are some ideas to help you appeal to this fickle audience and make a lasting impression.

1. Learn to speak their language. What resonates with adults generally will not gain you favor with teens and younger buyers. Avoid dry, professional-sounding language that comes across as “stuffy.” Instead, research the latest lingo and buzz-phrases and use them liberally in your marketing materials and on your website.

2. Stay relevant on social media. A recent study showed that nearly 71% of teens use multiple social media platforms, from Facebook and Twitter to Instagram to Pinterest. These channels are an excellent way to reach your younger target audience, so be sure to keep your profiles fresh and post often with engaging content that’s meaningful to this demographic.

3. Give a “free gift” at your place of business. Consider having a trendsetting lapel pin custom made with your company’s logo and a slogan that’s meaningful to the teen crowd. With all the options available for size, style and even add-ons (like sparkling faux gemstones), you can create a pin that truly stands apart.

Pass this lapel pin out to your younger customers as a free gift when they make a purchase at your establishment. They’ll wear this conversation piece out and about, essentially give your business free advertising! As an added incentive to hang on to your lapel pin, tell recipients that if they wear the pin on their next visit to your store or eatery, they’ll receive a special discount.

4. Be more mobile. Today’s teens, for the most part, aren’t sitting around at a desktop computer surfing the web. They’re more likely to access websites and social media via their smart phone while they’re hanging with friends, at school, at the mall or out to eat. Make sure your business website is mobile-friendly. Even better, have a customer app created exclusively for your company.

This way, your prospective teen customers will always have you at their fingertips.

5. Do giveaways at local, youth-oriented events. Make a splash at your town’s next 5K, baseball game, festival or holiday parade by giving away custom-designed silicone bracelets. These wristbands are available in a mind-blowing array of colors and styles—including swirled, multicolored, debossed and even glow in the dark.

Have a representative from your store or café hand out bracelets to young people in the crowd, or pass them out at the entrance to the event. Feel free to mix up colors and styles to get kids talking and comparing.

Be sure to include your company name and website address as well as the icons for Facebook and other social media sites you’re on. That way, teens will know where they can find you if they want to learn more!
